Hot Cripple #6/March 2015- Esther Vergeer

This "Hot Cripple" Series is an experiment; an effort to bring attention to the fact that Disability isn't necessarily synonymous with Ugly- as in Ugly Laws, which proliferated this country for over a century.

This month we feature Dutch Tennis sensation, Esther Vergeer.
Vergeer began playing wheelchair tennis at the age of 12, having lost the use of her legs four years earlier after complications following spinal surgery. She also played wheelchair basketball, but focused on the racket sport and became world No. 1 for the first time in 1999.

Vergeer spent 668 weeks at the top of the rankings, reaching a decade long unbeaten record on January 30, 2013.

Combining singles and doubles, Esther has won 42 Grand Slam tournaments, 22 year-end championships and 7 Paralympics titles. Vergeer was the world number one wheelchair tennis player from 1999 until her retirement in February 2013. In singles matches, she was undefeated since January 2003 and ended her career on a winning streak of 470 matches. She is often mentioned as the most dominant player in professional sports.
Ever.
Love. Set. Match.
